Common questions about Silica in plastic & polymer applications
Quartz Silica is an important functional filler used in plastics and polymer compounds to improve both mechanical and thermal performance. It enhances strength, stiffness, hardness, dimensional stability, heat resistance, and scratch resistance of plastic products. Silica also helps reduce shrinkage during processing, improves barrier properties against moisture and gases, and increases wear resistance. In addition, it acts as a cost-effective reinforcing filler by partially replacing expensive polymer resins while maintaining product performance.
Our Quartz Silica products are available in a wide range of controlled micro-fine particle sizes suitable for different polymer and epoxy applications. Popular grades include Micron Silica 4010, Micron Silica 2080, Micron Silica 1240, Micron Silica 5030, Silcoat 60 SET®, and Silcoat 60 T®. These grades are manufactured using iron-free grinding and air classification technology to ensure consistent particle size distribution, better dispersion, and smooth processing performance.
Silcoat grades are specially surface-treated silica fillers developed for epoxy insulator applications. These grades improve filler-resin interaction and provide excellent dispersion within epoxy systems, resulting in superior electrical, thermal, and mechanical performance. Silcoat grades offer high dielectric strength, excellent arc and tracking resistance, low thermal expansion, reduced shrinkage, improved weather resistance, and better durability under thermal and environmental stress. They also improve processability and allow higher filler loading, making them ideal for high-voltage insulators, bushings, transformers, switchgear, and epoxy cast components.
Our Silica grades are widely used in engineering plastics, PVC compounds, polypropylene and polyethylene compounds, masterbatches, thermoset resins, rubber compounds, coatings, adhesives, packaging films, electrical encapsulation systems, epoxy castings, insulators, and switchgear components. These products benefit from improved strength, dimensional stability, thermal resistance, and long-term durability.
Our Silica grades provide several advantages in plastics applications, including improved tensile strength and stiffness, enhanced dimensional stability, higher heat resistance, better scratch and abrasion resistance, reduced shrinkage, excellent dispersion, improved processability, better moisture and gas barrier properties, higher filler loading capability, superior electrical insulation properties, and excellent weather and chemical resistance. These benefits make our Silica grades highly suitable for high-performance engineering plastics, polymer compounds, and epoxy insulation systems.
