Common questions about Mica for Pigments in inks and pigments applications
Mica is a group of layered alumino-silicate minerals sharing a sheet-like crystal structure. Its platy lamellar platelets align between pigment particles during dispersion, creating directional spacing that reduces pigment–pigment contact, improves dispersion uniformity, minimises settling, and enhances optical consistency — making it an effective and reliable pigment extender.
Mica's optically flat and transparent platelets reflect and transmit light in a controlled manner, enhancing brightness and tone clarity of coloured pigments without overpowering colour — improving visual depth, consistency, and overall optical uniformity in the pigment system.
Muscovite (K-Al) is most widely used for pigment extension — very high availability, high brightness, and optically neutral, making it ideal for colour-critical applications. Phlogopite (Mg-rich) offers excellent thermal stability and slightly darker tone — suited for applications requiring high-temperature resistance.
Overlapping mica platelets form a layered micro-structure that supports pigment suspension, reduces running, sagging, and settling, and maintains stable rheology. The tough elastic nature of mica allows it to withstand mechanical stress during processing while maintaining dispersion integrity.
Improved pigment dispersion, enhanced optical consistency, stable paste handling and storage, reduced formulation variability, and reliable long-term pigment performance in both water-based and solvent-based systems.
