Common questions about Non-Halogenated Flame Retardants in plastic & polymer applications
FR (Flame Retardant) grades play an important role in improving the fire safety and performance of plastic compounds. ATH (Aluminium Trihydrate) and MDH (Magnesium Hydroxide) act as halogen-free flame retardants that reduce flame spread, suppress smoke generation, and lower toxic gas emissions during combustion. These grades release water vapor when exposed to heat, which cools the polymer surface and forms a protective barrier layer that delays thermal degradation. FR grades also enhance electrical insulation, thermal stability, and safety performance in plastics used for wires & cables, electrical appliances, automotive parts, rubber compounds, and engineering plastics.
Our ATH grades are available in multiple particle sizes to suit different polymer applications. AL FR 3T and AL FR 3 are available in 2–4 µm, AL FR 5 in 4–6 µm, AL FR 7 in 6–8 µm, and AL FR 9 in 7.5–9.5 µm average particle size (D50). MAG FR, our MDH grade, is available in 2.7–3.7 µm particle size. This broad particle size range helps optimize dispersion, mechanical properties, processing behavior, and flame retardancy performance in plastics.
Our ATH grades provide efficient flame retardancy and smoke suppression in plastic compounds through endothermic decomposition at approximately 220°C. During exposure to heat, ATH releases water vapor that cools the material surface, dilutes combustible gases, and reduces flame propagation. Surface-treated AL FR 3T offers superior dispersion, improved filler-polymer compatibility, and enhanced mechanical properties in HFFR cable compounds and PVC formulations. ATH grades also improve arc-track resistance, electrical insulation, flexibility, and reinforcement, making them suitable for PVC sheets, cable compounds, rubber compounds, thermosets, and FR SMC applications.
Our MAG FR grades provide high-temperature flame retardancy for engineering plastics and thermoplastic applications. MDH decomposes at around 340°C, releasing water vapor that absorbs heat and slows polymer decomposition while forming a protective magnesia layer on the plastic surface. MAG FR grades significantly reduce smoke density and toxic gas emissions, making them suitable for low smoke and halogen-free applications. Surface-treated MDH also improves compatibility with polymer matrices, resulting in better mechanical strength, impact resistance, and durability in PP, PE, EVA, polyolefins, and electrical & electronic plastic applications.
Our FR grades offer several advantages in plastic applications, including excellent halogen-free flame retardancy, low smoke generation, and reduced toxic gas emission during fire exposure. They improve thermal stability, electrical insulation, and arc-track resistance while enhancing mechanical properties such as flexibility, reinforcement, and impact strength. The grades provide better dispersion and compatibility in polymer systems, allowing higher filler loading and improved processing performance. They are environmentally safe, non-toxic, and cost-effective alternatives to brominated and chlorinated flame retardants. These FR grades are widely suitable for HFFR cables, PVC compounds, engineering plastics, thermosets, and rubber applications requiring superior fire safety performance.
