Common questions about Kaolin in ceramic applications
Kaolin is a hydrated aluminium silicate mineral that provides the ceramic industry with white-firing colour, high fusion point, and controlled plasticity. It is the backbone of porcelain, sanitaryware, tableware, and tile formulations, delivering brightness, translucency, and dimensional stability after firing.
HGMS (High Gradient Magnetic Separation) is a beneficiation process that removes iron, TiO₂, and other heavy mineral contaminants from kaolin. It ensures exceptionally low impurity levels, delivering high firing whiteness and consistent quality critical for premium tiles, glaze compounds, and tableware.
KAOLUXE and MICRON CHINA GL 90 CAKE are specifically suited for GVT and mega white vitrified tiles. Their high firing whiteness, HGMS-processed low impurity levels, and controlled particle size distribution deliver the brightness and consistency required for premium vitrified floor tiles.
High-purity kaolin with low iron and TiO₂ content — such as KAOLIN GL PRIME and KAOLIN MM1 — allows light to pass through the thin ceramic wall rather than being absorbed or scattered, creating the translucency characteristic of fine porcelain and bone china.
In glaze formulations, kaolin acts as a suspension agent preventing settling of glaze ingredients, provides alumina (Al₂O₃) for glaze stability, contributes to opacity and whiteness, and helps achieve smooth glaze surface texture and consistent chemistry during firing.
In slip casting, the particle size distribution of kaolin directly controls casting rate, slip viscosity, and slip stability. A controlled distribution — as in MICRON CHINA DKT 90 and PURAFLOW 90 — ensures fast and uniform mould filling, consistent wall thickness, and good demoulding without cracking.
