Calcium Bromide (CaBr₂) is a high-density clear brine fluid used in oil and gas completion and workover operations. It provides excellent hydrostatic pressure control while maintaining formation compatibility. Due to its high solubility and clarity, it is idea

Common questions about Calcium Bromide in oil & gas applications
Calcium bromide brine can achieve fluid densities from approximately 11.6 ppg (1.39 SG) at low concentration up to approximately 14.2 ppg (1.70 SG) at saturation. CaBr₂ brine can be blended with CaCl₂ at lower densities or with zinc bromide (ZnBr₂) at higher densities (up to 19.2 ppg / 2.30 SG) to cover the full range of completion fluid density requirements.
CaBr₂ clear brine is solids-free, eliminating the risk of barite or other solid particles invading and plugging the productive formation. Solids-free fluids maintain formation permeability, reduce skin damage, and can be removed without mechanical cleaning or acid treatment.
CaBr₂ brine is compatible with most formation brines and does not precipitate damaging solids at reservoir conditions when properly engineered. Compatibility testing with formation water is essential before use in CaSO₄-bearing formations.
Yes. CaBr₂ brine maintains its density and chemical stability at temperatures exceeding 200°C and pressures above 10,000 psi. For HPHT wells requiring densities above CaBr₂ saturation density (14.2 ppg), CaBr₂ is blended with ZnBr₂ to achieve the required density.
CaBr₂ brine is corrosive to carbon steel and low-alloy steel tubulars, especially at elevated temperatures. Corrosion inhibitors must be added to all CaBr₂ brine systems. High-density CaBr₂ may require corrosion-resistant alloy (CRA) tubulars. Oxygen exclusion is critical as dissolved oxygen accelerates corrosion significantly.
CaBr₂ is typically stored as concentrated liquid brine (52% solution at ~14.2 ppg) in closed, lined storage tanks to prevent atmospheric CO₂ absorption and oxygen ingress. Compatible storage materials include fibreglass, stainless steel, and high-density polyethylene (HDPE).
